For the people of Pécs, the Mecsek means what the Bükk does for the people of Miskolc, or the Dunazug Mountains for the residents of Budapest: a green oasis where they can quickly escape from the noise of the city. It fulfills this role perfectly, catering to the most diverse needs. The Misina park forests, almost merged with the city, are just as suitable for short afternoon getaways as the dense forests around Zengő are for multi-day camping trips. The travertine steps of the Meleg-mányi Valley, the waterfall of the Óbánya Valley, the Babás-szerkövek, and the Zsongor-kő, or Óbánya, which comes alive as a bustling tourist center on weekends – the Mecsek is rich in both natural and cultural values. The bustling downtown of Pécs, along with its leisure and accommodation options, ensures that we have a comfortable base, allowing us to mix hiking with vibrant cultural programs. However, the book also includes the lower neighbors of the Mecsek. We have selected a few from the Zselic, ideal for retreat with its quiet corners, the Szársomlyó with its unique wildlife, the Villány Mountains offering exciting vineyard adventures among the famous wine region's hills, and the Szekszárd Hills, which can be considered the Mecsek's little sibling, among the 40 hikes in this volume. The book's offerings range widely: from easy, few-kilometer forest walks enjoyable for beginner hikers to more exhausting treks for the experienced, a variety of routes can be found in this pocket-sized, richly illustrated publication with photos and drawings. With the QR codes placed on the maps, each can be opened in the Természetjáró application, making navigation simple with a smartphone. Therefore, in the descriptions, we could focus on exciting background information and a concise yet engaging introduction to the natural and cultural attractions along the way.
