The Most Beautiful Hikes in the Karancs and Medves-Vajdavár Regions #09

The Medves region and the impressive mass of Karancs have become a focal point for hikers in recent years, being one of the country's richest areas in natural and cultural attractions. The Ipolytarnóc Fossils Nature Reserve is a deservedly popular hiking center, and the picturesque alignment of the romantic ruins of Somoskő and Salgó is featured in hundreds of photos. However, the Vajdavár region is so off the beaten path that even its name has been debated for a long time. In the literature, it has appeared under names such as Ó-Bükk and Heves–Borsodi Hills (despite its central part having a mid-mountain character), but in public consciousness, it is mostly unknown. More popular destinations, especially the nearby Mátra and Bükk, draw tourists away from here, although the Vajdavár region is an exciting hiking area not only for connoisseurs and those who shy away from crowded forest trails. With this volume, we aimed to introduce not only the Vajdavár region but almost the entire Novahrad-Nógrád Geopark to hikers eager for discovery. Since part of it falls within Slovakia, this book is unique in that some of its hikes cross the border, or are entirely on the other side, around Ajnácskő. The book offers a wide range: from easy, few-kilometer forest walks enjoyable by beginner hikers to more demanding hikes for the more experienced, a variety of routes can be found among the 20 hikes in this pocket-sized, richly illustrated publication with photos and drawings. With QR codes placed on the maps, each can be opened in the Természetjáró app, making navigation simple with a smartphone. Therefore, in the descriptions, we could focus on exciting background information and concise yet engaging introductions to the natural and cultural attractions along the way.
