Gently nurturing fruit trees, serene hillsides, meadows and marshes that carefully guard rare wildflowers, streams hiding in the twilight of leafy tunnels, bell towers of touching simplicity made of wood, symbols of hope hidden within the scattered settlements. The Őrség, just like the Vendvidék or Göcsej, truly reveals itself to the calm observer. It would be a shame to rush through it. With this book, we aim to show that hiking is possible here too, just a bit differently than in our mountainous regions. What we can do here are mostly exploratory walks from sight to sight, often interrupted, across a landscape harmoniously shaped by people who respect nature. Stopping at open-air museums, churches, and pottery workshops, we can soak in the atmosphere of the borderland while enjoying the renowned hospitality of the Őrség. Many descendants of the guardians of the frontier offer traditional delicacies made from local ingredients; the area, popular among those seeking peaceful relaxation but fortunately still less affected by mass tourism, is also rich in quality guesthouses. The book offers a wide range: from easy, a few kilometers long forest walks enjoyable even for beginner hikers to more demanding hikes for the experienced, various routes can be found among the 20 tours in this pocket-sized, richly illustrated publication with photos and drawings. Using the QR codes placed on the maps, each can be opened in the Természetjáró app, making navigation simple with a smartphone. Therefore, in the descriptions, we have focused on exciting background information and concise yet engaging introductions to the natural and cultural attractions along the way.
