The Most Beautiful Hikes in Mátra

The Mátra. The name alone quickens the heartbeat not only of dedicated nature enthusiasts: even those who feel at home in their usual built environment strive to reach Hungary's highest peak, Kékes, at least once in their lifetime. And rightly so, as conquering the country's highest summit or witnessing the breathtaking panorama from the Galya Lookout is truly a bucket-list experience. However, the Mátra is about much more than its popular highlights. The eastern ridge, persistently rising from Sirok towards Kékes, dotted with splendid viewpoints, the peaks lined up in the Western Mátra, such as Nyikom or Muzsla, and the gently sloping valleys on the southern side of the mountain range, hiding rocky stream beds, are equally charming yet far less frequented parts of the Mátra. This meticulously crafted, spiral-bound book guides the reader to these areas as well. Its offerings span a wide range: from easy, few-kilometer forest walks enjoyable even for beginner hikers to more demanding hikes for the seasoned, including the Mátra-bérc divided into three "daily sections." Among the 40 tours in this pocket-sized, richly illustrated publication with photos and drawings, a variety of routes can be found. Therefore, the descriptions focus on exciting background information and concise yet engaging introductions to the natural and cultural attractions along the way.
